The Black Nazarene (Poong Itim na Nazareno)
is a life-sized image of a dark-skinned, kneeling Jesus Christ carrying the Cross enshrined in the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila, Philippines. The January 9 Procession re-enacts the image's Traslación (Transfer) in 1787, or "solemn transfer" to the Minor Basilica from its original shrine inside Intramuros. The Black Nazarene along with the Santo Niño (Holy Child Jesus), is venerated by Filipino devotees every Friday and is the most popular object of devotion in the Philippines. Catholics in the Philippines believe the Black Nazarene is miraculous and is able to heal diseases and sicknesses by touching it that's why during the Procession, you can see people eagerly clamber up the Andas (wheeled platform where the Black Nazarene is carried), touching parts of the Image with bare hands or cloths especially the right shoulder and even the rope to the side of the right shoulder. The Procession is notoriously long lasting for hours and hours and even up to 22 hours. Joining the procession is a great sacrifice on the part of the devotees, who are going to endure the heat, fatigue and the risk of being trampled upon by other devotees.

Pope Francis was visibly upset or irritated after a woman grabbed his hand
and yanked him towards her. This happened on New Year's Eve in Saint Peter's Square when he was walking through and greeting pilgrims who were situated beside the barrier. The unexpected incident caused him to lose patience and smack the woman's hand right away to be freed from her grip. And of course, the footage circulated widely after. Watch the video below. |
