Most people study hard in school all their lives
to get a good chance in getting high-paying jobs while some prefer to start their own businesses right after school to earn more than most workers.
The end goal is all about living the most-coveted comfortable life
which means first and foremost, living with no worries in finances and being able to afford a lot of luxuries around. If one is employed, he strives to become an excellent worker to have great chances in promotions which means, higher pay and bigger benefits.
The same is true with the one who is managing his own business.
He works hard while he is still young so that in time, he will reap a big harvest. The one who is employed and the one who is managing his own business are both going to fulfill their dream lives if they are determined and persistent. And then at the end of their fruitful years, when they're in their 60's or beyond, they retire to a life that they've been longing for the entire time - being rich with a lot of lifetime savings in the bank and living comfortably. No more of those 7 to 3 or 8 to 4 or even earlier than those. Money is no longer a problem for having paid social security and other insurance policies earn them a substantial amount of pension already. Free from work now, they just lounge around the house most of their waking hours or maybe doing nothing but household chores. And that's a big part of retirement. But that is not the ideal retirement for anyone to have. Maybe it's the best life around when one doesn't have to worry about company bosses watching your every move, or going to work late and of not being effective in the workplace, etc. But that sort of best kind of life will only be temporary. It will soon give any retiree the boredom and monotony he never experienced before. He will feel very unproductive and unfulfilled doing nothing. Watching TV or DVD all day won't satisfy, or going out to places will never be enough. Vacation is not an everyday option for it will also get him drained and weary and will cost him so much. It's just a once-in-a-while kind of indulgence or just simply occasional or once a month. And forgetting all those decades working in a company or managing his own business is impossible. It's already deeply rooted inside of him that from time to time he has an uncontrollable longing for it. And there's the big issue about the retirees' health. They often get sick more often after retirement. They seem to age faster at this point in their lives than ever before. Staying at home most of the time makes them physically weaker since they no longer move around like when they had their jobs. A lot of them have reduced their waking hours for they tend to sleep more even at daytime. Ailing and aching bodies are common unless they engage in some exercises or workouts that's designed for their age.
Besides the physical is the mental condition.
A lot of retirees tend to be more forgetful than they were still at work or busy with business. They used to be mentally alert and active, calculating numbers, always thinking about things, but now no more of those. There are some retirees who went back to their old jobs when they felt like their savings were draining even if they were aged and weak. That's fortunate enough to be able to go back to the same jobs. But there were others who had to start all over again and landed lower positions than they had before. It's sad but true, and they preferred this than not having a job at all. Even if it means little earnings, they still accepted it. And it's good to know that many others are engaged in some other fields totally different from their lifelong jobs. They are into farming, raising some livestock and gardening. Those who were employees all their lives are trying their best in coming up with some businesses to feel what it's like to be bosses. And still others are doing one of the noblest jobs of them all and that is, taking care of their grandchildren when parents are too busy to attend to them. Whatever retirees do during their retirement years should be best for their health, happiness and contentment besides enjoying their vast pension and savings accounts. So is it good to retire or not? Yes in certain situations, and definitely no in some. It all depends on the person. If he loves his job and feels he is still effective and productive in the workplace then he should not retire even when he's old. He can just slow down a little bit but not totally. But if he feels like it's time for him to rest and relax, then there's nothing wrong with that too. But to rest and relax should not mean doing nothing at all. He should couple it with doing something extraordinary so that he can make his retirement more meaningful and remarkable like doing charity works or being benevolent or simply taking care of his family, including his grandchildren, spending full time with them like he never did before. But the best thing any retiree should do is to be active in the church, to be pious or devoted to his religion. He should think about this time as his ultimate thanksgiving for having lived a great life and able to enjoy all the good things.
