What do you think is the hardest thing to do?
Is it to be super rich, to be super intelligent or to be super good-looking? With all your dreams since childhood, what have been your biggest? I bet you never dreamed of it at all.
You can dive the deepest oceans nowadays
with a submersible to explore the uncharted, you can climb the highest mountain on earth and take great selfies, and you can own vast fortunes and business empires that employ millions of people. But what is the hardest thing for anyone to achieve? Certainly, not one of those above.
Let's take a moment to reflect and take a deeper look at ourselves.
We know we can be intelligent if we strive for it. Spend many years in school, do research, browse the internet and be aware of what's going on in the world. We can be handsome or beautiful to make everyone fall in love. We can exercise, workout, have a great diet and we can put on creams and lotions to smoothen skin. We can even take supplements to get more nutrients to make our bodies healthier and more active. We can be ultra rich if we work hard day and night and be determined and persistent. We can grab every business opportunity that comes along and invest everywhere and diversify. We can set higher goals because the higher the goals, the richer we become. But very sad to say, we can hardly or impossibly be good! Yes, to be good is the hardest thing to do on earth! Being good is not just being nice and kind to everyone. It's not just being humble and being gentle in disposition. It involves so many things that are contrary to most desires. It's being calm, patient, positive in every aspect, respectful to young and old, generous, benevolent, charitable, generous and sharing to those in need, caring and helpful for the poor and the aged and those who are neglected and less fortunate. It has to include being honest, sincere, truthful and forgiving to anyone who wrongs us, understanding, considerate, respectful and doing all of God's commandments! Doing only one or two or just a few is not enough and doesn't make us any good. If you are nice, kind and friendly to the poor but you don't help them in their needs, what purpose is your being nice, kind and friendly?
If you do business legally and pay all your taxes
but you don't give your employees what they deserve, do you think you're doing something right? If you're good to your friends only but fight with your family, do you think you're really good? Even if you make friends with the entire neighborhood your friendliness and that friendship never amount to anything if you're not close to your family, if you always have a falling-out. If you only love your friends but hate your enemies, are you doing something extraordinary? If you only love people who love you, you can't receive a blessing because that's selfishness and your love is conditional; you only love because you will be loved back. Try loving people who hate, despise or ridicule you and something good will come to you. And if you're rich and doing charities, giving money to various foundations and organizations, are you doing something great and amazing when you just give what you have to spare of your riches? Do you remember that story in the New Testament when Jesus said that the poor woman who gave few coins actually gave more than the rich man because she gave everything she had to live on? And lastly, if you're nice and kind, generous, benevolent, respectful, helpful, sharing, sincere, honest, humble, patient, gentle, good-natured and all but you don't go to church to attend the Holy Mass, do you think God is pleased with all your goodness? Of course not! Put God first in all you do before you do them all to your fellow. If you don't practice what you preach, if you don't walk the talk and if you're only words without actions, it's not good. So simply put it: to be good is to put God first everyday of your life and not to sin at all! You don't have to be perfect and never make mistakes but your life should be all good deeds and never any wrongdoing. With those in mind, who can be good? Who can perform all those? No one. But certainly, only very few in time.
