It's their only way to make money
for most of them don't know
anything else to do.
Most of them don't attend school
simply because they can't afford
and just roam around the city
to find something to live on.
Whatever they find in the garbage
they sell to junk shops
or they use them for their own.
Bottles both plastic and glass
are sold for some money,
and anything made of iron or steel
are still accepted at those shops.
Even leftover foods are never ignored.
Those coming from restaurants
are plentiful and can be reconsumed.
They are brought back to their kitchens
and spiced up again for the whole family
and even sold to the rest of their friends.
Most of the scavengers
don't have permanent homes
and just sleep beside the streets
or under some structures in the city.
While very few of them live in some houses,
still those houses are very poor structures
made of very light or very cheap materials
and are situated in abandoned lots
and in some squatters' area
which are very disorganized,
very untidy and crowded
with no immediate access
to water and electricity.
They don't own anything else
except some household items
and some clothes
most of which look like rags.
In the cities,
many people are not disciplined enough
to take care of their trashes
or to dispose them at the proper places.
Littering around is common
that's why trashes are seen
in most corners of any city street.
Thankfully and fortunately,
scavengers are everywhere
making their rounds in all parts of the city
to look for anything of value to sell.
They take a lot of things from the garbage heap
and therefore reducing the volume.
They significantly reduce the trash
and they minimize the work load
of the street cleaners and sweepers
who are employed by the local governments.
Scavenging is a very dirty job,
and the dirtiest of them all.
Although some considered it
to be a very low, very embarrassing
or very humiliating job,
it is very remarkable
and one that deserves so much praise.
And not to forget,
so much respect too.
It never easy to go through a pile of garbage
that are stinking with a lot of rotten matter.
But these people are doing it
their entire lives.
The local and national governments
should create some laws
that will alleviate these people's condition.
Those that concern on housing,
livelihood and education are most needed.
And even the private people all over
should acknowledge and uphold
the great role of scavengers every time.
They deserve the same treatment and respect
anyone of us want to be done to ourselves.
After all,
they are still human beings
who are less fortunate than us.
And for those who have more in life,
a kind and generous heart
is all there is to give.
