A president should be someone
who has the heart and mind of a leader
who leads by example,
who has a track record of public service,
who treats the poor and the rich alike,
who is charitable, benevolent
and who is above all,
religious and God-fearing.
He/She must be someone
who treats the people
the way he/she wants to be treated
and the way he/she treats himself/herself and his/her family.
He/She must love justice and equality for all people,
and he/she must not take his/her position
as something he/she can make money out of.
He/She shouldn't be someone
who loves money and riches,
but someone who is after
the welfare of the whole nation.
If he/she lusts for power,
then that power should only be
the power to serve the people
with all his/her heart and soul
and nothing else.
If he/she is single,
he/she should be known
to live in decency and integrity.
If he/she is married,
he/she must be a good and faithful husband/wife
and an exemplary father/mother to his/her children.
And his/her goals for the country should be:
to eliminate poverty,
to eliminate corruption in the government,
to create jobs for everyone,
to provide affordable, if not free, healthcare, etc.
All his/her wishes, dreams and goals
are not only for himself/herself and his/her family and friends,
but also for the whole country.
And there are things to ponder on:
A country's prosperity, stability, peace
should not only be credited to the president alone,
but also on the people around him/her
especially his/her advisers,
the people who are taxpayers,
the overseas workers,
the foreign investors
and the other nations who are allies
or who do business with the country.
Even if the president is very well educated,
very intelligent and very clever,
even if he/she has a good track record for public service,
still he/she can't take all the credits.
He/She can never do it all alone
for he/she is not God.
And if the country is not doing good,
if it is in a crisis,
if it has too many bad debts,
if it doesn't provide jobs,
if it fails in its work for peace, etc.
then the blame should not be only on the president
but also on the people as well
especially those who don't pay the right taxes,
on the officials who are inefficient
or those who are corrupt,
on the calamities ravaging the country,
and so many other things.
The problems of the country
are caused by so many things
and not just because of the president.
We have to remember that these days
no country can survive alone.
It has to depend on the other countries
for its economic prosperity and stability.
But the biggest problem in choosing a president
is how to know the right one.
We don't know what is in their hearts
and if their intentions are good or bad.
Only God knows.
