This I think is very difficult to answer
but that should be answered by the religious community or the church. Years ago, we heard and watched the news about a flashflood ravaging an entire city and the nearby towns, killing hundreds or even thousand of residents. A man who was not been seen or heard by his family lived in one of those places and he was thought to be one of the fatalities.
Then somebody told the family
that the man drowned while trying to escape the flash flood. And he was buried along with the other victims in a mass grave. They were surprised by such news and at the same time heartbroken because although they never heard about him for decades since he left, he was still a part of the family. So without hesitation, his family and even his friends prayed for his soul and grieved for few weeks. But years later, they found out he was alive and actually survived the catastrophe. The question is: Did those prayers by his family and friends affect him in any way knowing he was not really dead, because what they offered were not ordinary prayers but prayers for the departed souls? And some of those prayers were offered by the priests during the Holy Mass. And now that he's been dead for years, will those prayers help his soul to be at peace and rest in a better place? Feel free to post your comments and opinions.
