struck the South Island of New Zealand
where over a million people live.
issued tsunami warning
after it triggered waves of 2.5 meters
above the usual levels.
But the tsunami warning
has now been lifted.
The quake struck 55 miles (93 km)
northeast of Christchurch
where a 6.3 magnitude quake
devastated the area killing almost 200
and injuring thousands more
and reducing many areas of the city
to rubble.
