This year 2018's Valentine's Day falls on Ash Wednesday,
a very important day for Catholics and many Christians around the world. So how do you celebrate love and romance then?
You can have dinner during the night in some fancy restaurant
but certainly avoid meat in the servings. And very important is to attend the Holy Mass so that ashes in the shape of the cross will be drawn on your forehead.
Valentine's Day is very much celebrated around the world
by lovers and couples and even by families and friends because it is the day of love and romance and nothing else. Giving flowers is the first gifts that comes to mind with vendors all over displaying popular varieties like daisies, lilies and most especially red roses. Chocolates coupled with red roses are very special gifts but any other material thing does for this special day as long as it is given with love.
Dinner dates in the evening in fancy restaurants
or in any other place are more romantic with establishments decorating stuffs of hearts and heart-shaped balloons all over the place. Some prefer in parks in seaside boulevards or watch romantic movies especially those that feature a happily-ever-after finale while more lovers nowadays want to spend time in hotels or in places where they can be alone. Around the city, bars and concert venues feature popular artists performing sets of good old love songs and classic favorites serenading lovers and couples all throughout the night. Valentine's Day 2018 becomes more romantic and more memorable for lovers because it is also Ash Wednesday. They can go to church together anytime of the day to attend the Holy Mass and have the ashes painted on their foreheads in the form of a cross.
Ashes are from the palm branches
gathered from the previous years during Palm Sunday. Having ashes on the forehead reminds everyone of being created from dust and returning to dust after, and of the duties involved which are repentance, abstaining from meat or fasting from food and water for a period of time. Some avoid food and water the entire day or like in the Holy Bible, no food and water for 3 days and 3 nights if possible and praying and repenting the whole time. Fasting is so hard to do with all the great-tasting food around but should be practiced by Catholics and Christians for it strengthens our relationship with the Most High. Remember that our body does not only depend on food alone but also on God Himself. Being without food and water for some time make our body depend on God alone and nothing and no one else. Valentine's Day is not a holiday as well as Ash Wednesday, which is well-attended in the Holy Masses with more people coming to church. Celebrate this day with love and at the same time, with a Holy Mass and have the ashes painted on the forehead.
